Become a Trainer
Our strength is in our trainers. To be a Remote Emergency Care trainer means that you have a strong background not only in medicine, but also the outdoors. Our trainers include experts in the fields of climbing, kayaking, mountaineering, yachting, sailing, diving, exploration and rescue. Their medical backgrounds vary from doctors to expedition leaders who have learnt through experience.
There are three categories of Remote Emergency Care trainer:
- Category I authorised to deliver Remote Emergency Care levels 1 and 2
- Category II authorised to deliver Remote Emergency Care level 3
- Category III authorised to deliver Remote Emergency Care levels 4 and 5, and the Responder series
Remote Emergency Care Tutors are drawn from any category, and are responsible for trainer mentoring and development, and delivery of the Train the Trainer courses. Remote Emergency Care Tutors are selected by the unanimous vote of the existing Tutors and undergo annual Tutor training.
Your route to becoming a Remote Emergency Care trainer will depend on where you’re starting from. If you’re already qualified with another organisation, you’ll need to co-teach a few courses with a Remote Emergency Care Tutor, and then he/she will sign you off as a Remote Emergency Care trainer at the appropriate level. If you’re new to medical training, you’ll need to complete a few extra steps:
- Attend a Remote Emergency Care level 4 course (as a participant)
- This is to ensure you are familiar with the Remote Emergency Care style and ethos, and that becoming a Remote Emergency Care trainer is right for you.
- Attend a Remote Emergency Care Train the Trainers course
- This focuses on training techniques, psychology of learning, lesson planning and effective delivery.
- Write and submit lesson plans for the Remote Emergency Care level 2 course
- These will be assessed for sign-off by a Remote Emergency Care Tutor
- Once your lesson plans have been signed off you are qualified as an Assistant Trainer
- Shadow a minimum of three level 2 courses, and co-train selected topics
- Deliver a level 2 course under the supervision of a Remote Emergency Care Tutor
- This will be assessed for sign-off, and if successful you will be awarded Category I trainer status
In order to progress through the categories, trainers repeat the shadow/co-train/sign-off process under the guidance of the Tutors.
