The Remote Emergency Care series

The Remote Emergency Care series is made up of modular weekend courses. Levels 1,2 and 3 require no previous training and participants may start directly at any of these levels. Please see below for further details of these courses.

Level 1

Urban First Aid
A one-day practical course focusing on first response skills – the skills required to deal with a life-threatening incident when an experienced first aider is not available. The course involves plenty of hands-on practice including outdoor scenarios.

Level 2
Outdoor First Aid
A two or three-day course* that is recognised by the MLTUK, BOS, BCU, RYA and other outdoor governing bodies. On this course we focus on dealing with incidents far from medical help with the minimal equipment you would carry while participating in or leading outdoor activities. Again the emphasis is on practical skills with plenty of hands-on practice including lots of outdoor scenarios. This course can be tailored to the requirements of special interest groups, for example climbers, mountain leaders, paddlesports instructors or divemasters.

*Please note - for some Irish Mountain Training Board qualifications, a three day course is required.

Level 3
First Aid at Work ( HSE/HSA)
This three or four-day course* is suitable for those requiring full Health and Safety Executive/Authority first aid training for the workplace and covers the appropriate syllabus for first aiders at work. This course trains the first aider to manage an incident until professional medical care arrives. Covering all the topics outlined for level 2, the subjects are explored in more depth, with an emphasis on gaining a good understanding of the fundamental principles. This course also covers the legal aspects of first aid as applied to the workplace.

*Please note - HSE (UK) currently requires a 4-day training course; HAS (Ireland) currently requires a 3-day training course.

Level 4

This two-day course is designed for those playing or working in remote areas and builds on previous training. In order to provide tailored content, participants choose to specialise in either Rescue or Expedition streams. In order to attend a level 4 course, participants are required to have completed a Remote Emergency Care level 2 course (or equivalent) within the last two years.

Remote (Rescue)
Ideal for rescue teams, or expeditions carrying rescue kit, this stream includes the use of medical equipment such as airway devices, suction, C-spine collars and spinal boards. Advanced techniques such as drug administration, helmet removal and use of medical gases are also covered. AED (defibrillator) training is included in this course.

Remote (Expedition)
This stream is designed for expedition leaders operating in remote areas with standard expedition first aid kits and drug packs. The course includes topics such as wound care, hydration, altitude illness, frostbite, insect and animal bites, and commonly encountered tropical diseases. AED (defibrillator) training is included in this course.

Level 5

This two-day training complements the level 4 course to provide the participant with comprehensive wilderness medical care skills. Training includes the use of an on-call doctor, reduction of dislocated shoulders, ankle assessment, advanced incident management and evacuation management. Again, training is tailored into Rescue or Expedition streams. In order to attend Level 5 training, participants are required to have completed the appropriate level 4 stream within the last two years.

Wilderness (Rescue)
This stream includes training in the paramedic-assist role, including assisting with IV cannulation, advanced airway management and pulse oximetry.

Wilderness (Expedition)
This stream includes training in techniques such as drug administration, cervical collar application, helmet removal and the use of medical gases.
WT
Wilderness Telemedicine
This two-day course runs concurrently with Level 5 training, and is designed for expedition or rescue team doctors who will be operating as a telemedicine Physician to remote teams. Giving medical advice and instruction over a telephone or radio is an acquired skill. This training, staffed by experienced doctors and medics, guides doctors in applying their current expertise to the telemedicine Physician role.
AED(R)
AED (Refresher)
Refresher training for those who have attended AED training within the last 2 years.
MG(R)
Medical Gases (Refresher)
Refresher training for those who have received medical gases training within the last 2 years.

The Responder series

This training is aimed at wilderness practitioners requiring robust medical skills for remote and/or extreme environments.
the remote emergency care series
MFR
Medical First Responder
Groups who have completed the Remote Emergency Care levels 2, 4 and 5 within two years will be awarded the Medical First Responder qualification.
WFR
Wilderness First Responder
The First Responder certificate is growing in reputation as a global standard in training. This intensive 6 day Wilderness First Responder course takes the First Responder syllabus and applies it to remote situations where evacuation may be protracted and complex.

Practitioners are encouraged to gather data to enable an online doctor to make a diagnosis and direct basic treatment. The course develops the ability to gather and communicate medical and scene information and focuses on core competencies: Effective patient assessment in diverse environments and situations; safe, appropriate use of oxygen, AED and Entonox; treatment for fractures including traction; patient transportation; triage and scene management; and long-term patient management

The course is designed for practitioners working in remote locations, for those with support from another more experienced medic or online support from a doctor. Participants have included Mountain Rescue teams, remote exploration team members and expedition leaders.

In order to attend WFR training, participants are encouraged to have previously attended basic first aid training and to have a keen interest in outdoor activities.

W-EMT

Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician
The 7-day Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician training is one of the leading medic training courses in both Europe and the USA. The course is aimed at practitioners who are responsible for providing medical and trauma pre-hospital care in remote environments. Training is delivered by the internationally renowned Wilderness Emergency Medical Services Institute (Europe), and is recognised by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Practitioners are trained to make differential diagnoses, and provide both practical and advanced patient management with online consultation from a doctor. Practical scenario-based training encompasses single and multiple-patient situations with both short and extended evacuations.

The course is designed for remote medics working with on-line support from a doctor when available but also for those who are “out there” on their own.  Clients have included Mountain Rescue team medics, trauma medics from the armed forces, doctors, paramedics, EMT’s and remote exploration team nurses.

In order to attend the W-EMT course, participants are encouraged to have completed WFR training (or equivalent) within the last two years, and have a strong outdoor background.

CP
Command Physician
This 7-day course runs concurrently with W-EMT training, and is recognised as an industry standard for doctors wishing to develop skills and experience in pre-hospital care in remote areas. In addition, doctors will be trained to give good medical advice and instruction over a telephone or radio to W-EMTs working in the field. This training, staffed by an international faculty of experienced wilderness doctors and medics, guides doctors in applying their current expertise to both challenging wilderness environments and the Command Physician role.
WFR (R) Wilderness First Responder Refresher
This 3-day course refreshes the WFR qualification.
W-EMT (R)
Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician Refresher
This 3-day course refreshes the W-EMT qualification.

The Trainer series

The complexity of wilderness medicine makes training wilderness pre-hospital care a rewarding and challenging profession. Remote Emergency Care believes in concept-based training, as protocols often have severe limitations in diverse environments. In order to effectively communicate these concepts, Remote Emergency Care trainers are experts not only in medicine and the outdoors, but also in professional training techniques.

TtT
